This guide is in no way meant to be an article detailing specialised
philately, or the final word on what anybody might like to collect.
Instead I hope to share a few helpful tips that I have learnt during my many years of dealing in these interesting stamps, as well as pointing out
a few things that the collector may wish to look out for. A good
starting point for anybody who wants to know more about the philately of
South Africa would be to look for “The Stamps of the Union of South
Africa 1910/1961” (S.J. Hagger, 1986), this well-known book amongst S.A.
collectors is usually known as “The Handbook.” For example it lists
many varieties that are beyond the scope of most catalogues. If you
still want to know more then why not join the South Africa Collectors’
Society?
